About the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM Education) comprises over 24 full-time faculty members, 400 undergraduate students, and 150 graduate students. STEM Ed advances education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. Faculty in STEM Ed prepare professionals who have deep content knowledge, demonstrate a strong working knowledge of effective discipline-based pedagogies, and realize the potential of digital technologies to enhance learning. The department offers a Ph.D. in Learning and Teaching in STEM with concentrations in Mathematics and Statistics Education, Science Education, and Engineering and Technology Education. The department also offers an online Master of Education degree in STEM Education, with additional concentrations in Mathematics and Statistics Education, Science Education, and Engineering and Technology Education. In addition, STEM Ed offers undergraduate programs in Science Education, Mathematics Education, and Technology, Engineering and Design Education as well as an online Master of Arts in Teaching in all three content areas. Through the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as two minors and a graduate certificate, the department exemplifies an innovative merging of teacher education and the learning sciences that results in new pathways for teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service.
Essential Job Duties
The College of Education at North Carolina State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computer Science Education to join our faculty in the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (STEM ED). This faculty member will join one of our STEM Education programs and emphasize Computer Science Education for K-12. This includes researching, teaching, and mentoring students in the field of computer science education and/or teacher education as related to STEM Education.
The Assistant Professor would be expected to develop a program or research in the area, teach undergraduate and graduate courses for STEM Education, and participate in service activities. They will also be expected to integrate critical thinking and analysis and engage diverse learners through their teaching.
To be successful in this role, the candidate needs a strong background in a discipline related to STEM Education within our department of STEM Education in the College of Education, as well as computer science education. They also need to have excellent communication and leadership skills, as well as a passion for helping students succeed in the field of education with a computer science focus. The successful candidate will have a strong background in both computer science and STEM education, with a focus on conducting research related to computer science education and applying computer science concepts and skills to K-12 and teacher education settings. Preferred background would be a doctorate in either Mathematics and Statistics Education, Science Education, or Engineering and Technology Education with K-12 experiences and work related to computer science education
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in computer science education, with a focus on improving student learning outcomes
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the department of STEM education related to one or more disciplines associated with the department; including courses on topics such as programming, web design, data analysis, robotics, and computational thinking
- Develop and implement innovative curricula that integrates computer science concepts and skills into K-12 and higher education classrooms
- Publish scholarly articles in top journals, and present research findings at national and international conferences
- Pursue external funding opportunities to support research and program development in computer science education
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, and professional organizations, including serving on committees and collaborating with other faculty members on research and teaching projects
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and supervise doctoral dissertations
- Outreach to other colleges within the university for collaborative efforts with a focus on computer science education.

Minimum Education and Experience
- A Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, Statistic Education, Science Education, Engineering and Technology Education, or a related field.
- Teaching experience in K-12 settings in one or more disciplines related to STEM.
Other Required Qualifications
- A strong background in both computer science and education, with a focus on applying computer science concepts and skills to K-12 and higher education settings – including practical applications such as robotics and programming languages commonly used in educational settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, and community partners
Preferred Qualifications
- Evidence of excellence in teaching, with experience teaching computer science courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
- A research agenda with a record of publications in top-tier journals and conferences, and experience securing external funding to support research activities commensurate with experience.
- Experience working collaboratively with K-12 educators and schools, and a commitment to addressing equity and access issues in computer science education as related to STEM Education.
